I am sitting in my hotel in Guayaquil, Ecuador, getting ready to go to the pool and then head out to dinner in the city. I tried posting an update yesterday but ran out of internet minutes. Thursday and Friday were both packed with activities. Thursday included a tour of the Charles Darwin Research Center on Santa Cruz island, a visit to the Tomas De Berlanga school in the Santa Cruz highlands and a walk on some private property which is home to several giant tortoises.
Yesterday we spent the day on San Cristobal island. We spent the morning hiking high up onto the plateau above the beach to get a view of the surrounding area and also to get a close look at red-footed boobies who nest there. We also ran into a 10-inch centipede on the trail, which shockingly, didn't scare me. After that we came back and swam on the beach for what felt like hours, playing with the sea lions who live there.
In the afternoon, we sailed on to a giant rock off of San Cristobal called Kicker Rock and went deep sea snorkeling. The dramatic rock cliffs were beautiful, and the sun was hitting the water while we swam with sea turtles, huge sharks, and a couple of giant spotted eagle rays. After snorkeling we had champagne on deck as we sailed around kicker rock watching the sunset. It was one of the best days of the expedition for me, and I suspect they save one of the best places for last so that guests will want to keep coming back for more.
